Nasi Lemak

I have helped to make Nasi Lemak on numerous occasions at Hari Raya. Nasi Lemak is a Malaysian dish that has spicy sambal, hard-boiled egg, coconut rice, pandan leaf, nuts, dried anchovies. Some Nasi Lemak also includes fried chicken or curry.

You can buy the dried anchovies from many Asian grocery stores

You can make the sambal the day before. What we would do is slice the chili and then pickle it until soft. But if you are lazy you can also buy it from Asian supermarkets.

The nuts are just your roasted peanuts.

Then you cook your rice and your egg.

Hari Raya in Melbourne

We talk about this free community event for everyone in Melbourne.

Hari Raya means Open house in Malaysia and all the food and entry is free. This year like recent years, Hari Raya is held Malaysia Hall in August.

The event is run by the various Malaysian student’s society. It was sponsored by My Colonial cafe- a really great cafe in the city. So I expected some great food. The food was made lovingly by the student volunteers who had prepped it the day before. I had to bring own water though as the drink there is the rose tea and I’m trying to quit sugar.

I ran to the event knowing that I’d be served lots of different Malaysian food. From the city it is about a 6km run. This was not hard to do and there were not many trams on Sunday.

At 1pm, of course, there were many people but after 2pm it died down a bit. When you registered at the front they give you a ticket for the food. Of course, I got two as I wanted to try all.

Of course, there was the nasi impit and the curry chicken with rice. I really liked the rice and pickles and wanted more. During the time that I was there, they went through so much rice and pickles.  The Nasi Impit for some people was spicy and the sambal that came with the curry chicken was also spicy.

The Soto Ayam really disappointed me. The Soto Ayam is the Malaysian chicken soup with rice lumps. This one was rather lumpy and the chicken soup tasted like it was store-bought. It had waaay too much salt in there.

The tofu fa dessert was great. I picked the ginger syrup as that one didn’t have a lot of added sugar in there. The other brownish one looked like it did.

The organizers used a lot of plastic for the event and it was such a waste. What they should do next time is to ask everyone to bring their own plates, containers, and cutlery and that would save on the amount of rubbish produced. And they should have plain water for those that don’t want the tea. They can buy this water things from Officeworks and places that sell office supplies and its worth the money. I have seen so many people go for that tea and cendol because they were so thirsty from all the salt.

Many thanks for putting on this event and they should do this next year with these things in mind.


Volunteering for Hari Raya

Hari Raya is the term for Open house. Healthyintstudents was invited there by Malaysia Hall Resident club on Facebook to volunteer.

The Malaysia Hall is in Windsor and we ran there instead of take the tram as I’m open to a challenge like this. In a few weeks time they will be having their sports events in Albert Park.

Volunteering for them meant that I can learn a lot more about their culture and I did just that, Malaysians are generally happy and warm people who love their food. They are also non judgemental people and most of the people are huge!.

The shift went for 3.5 hours.

And fun we had chopping onions, chillis and pineapple. And mingling with others. I tried not to cry when chopping the onions, although I nearly did. Chopping chillis was harder as I tried to not cut my finger.

The lunch we had today was noodle in tomato and chilli sauce. Here the Malaysians are known for their chilli dishes. They are also known for their beehoon and lots of sauce in their dishes. This tasted really nice when it comes off the fryer. But when its cold its not.

We also had fun making the peanut sauce for the satay and smelling the garlic. The garlic did smell really good.

Week 32 of Marathon training by Akira

I think I may be allergic to dairy. This morning I had milk and last night I had yoghurt and I kept on coughing and I spewed this morning. I just finished my period. I think I have too much too frequently in the last few days.

Either that or I have too much fiber. I can’t have had too much fiber according to myfitnesspal.

In this week’s meditation we learned that life has its ups and downs and that there are many stressors throughout the day. This is quite normal and we just have to deal with it. Whether it is a fight or not.

My short run was just fine. It was 8km with not a lot of walk breaks. Yoga was all about stretching and lifting- something that I have difficulty with. I have difficulty with balancing.

At the end of that run one mentally ill lady scared me on a busy Clarendon st in South Melbourne. It was such a rare occurance which made me think more about the Salvos and the good work that they do. So if you can please buy a book off us and help the Salvos achieve their goals.

This week’s gym session was good but not great. It could have been a lot better if I had eaten more food and not thrown up. But oh well there is next week and I burnt 250 calories just by spinning.

This weeks long run had been great. I felt like I had a lot of energy and lots to give. I did at one point pee on myself in my pants but that was because there was no toilet anywhere to do so.

On the first part I took it too slow- this was due to drinking too much alcohol at the food and wine event. It was mainly for a tasting. Then along the way we passed by the Hawkers Bazaar in Malaysia Hall. Then we took a look. Here there were a lot of meal items for $6-$8. Not bad but if your run is finishing late then it is not a good idea.

Then we took a detour along Chapel st to St Kilda. It was fun and very vibrant for a Sunday afternoon.

At night Point Ormond Hill looks great. It is hard to see but I enjoy the eerie side of things. I don’t enjoy the horns though along St Kilda Road but oh well. At least they are not horning me.

Lets move 365: Mega Raya: volunteering and enjoying ourselves by Akira

Mega Raya was tons of fun this year. There were tons of new dishes to try and the one I tried during my volunteer shift was bee hoon. Bee Hoon is a Malaysian noodle dish with vermicelli and egg and prawn. I was surprised when the volunteers added tomato sauce to it and the dark soya sauce to it. I thought that it was for Migoreng. But I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out well.

I also had to cut chicken wings for the rending and that was bloody hard. Cooking for 700-800 people was also very difficult to do. Cooking chicken in the biggest of woks was the longest as each batch took 32 minutes to cook. Stirring the beef also took the time and effort. In the end the rending turned out to be quite flavourful.

On the Sunday many people came to this event and there was much food to be had there. There was rojak, beef and chicken rending, tomato rice and normal rice, rice cakes and soto ayam. The Soto Ayam was quite nice and there was this Malaysian dessert which I don’t know the name of but it is coconutty and not too sweet. Oh and it has sago.

I think the committee spent well over $1000 on this event. The rice cakes were bought from Malaysia.

New and prospective residents also got a tour of the house.

Almost all the kuih had gone by the time I got there but I managed to try one piece and it was lovely. And a bit sticky.

The tomato rice was lovely and the flavour was quite subtle.

It is a pity that there wasn’t any The Tarik but I sure liked the rose tea.
