Forecasting sales in the Health and Fitness industry

When we talk about sales in this industry we are talking about membership sales and class packages.

During COVID19 the Health and Fitness Industry has taken a huge hit due to closures and going online. Most people elsewhere have lost their jobs and without Jobkeeper the industry will not be able to survive.

Hence gyms have had to have scaled back their classes for a little while now. Its hard to find the consumer confidence.

Salespop.net says that it is hard to forecast sales during the pandemic and after it due to the many lockdowns. Online training has been in demand during the last few months as we bunker down and stay at home. One way they can forecast sales is by using the data that they got when people downloaded their live workouts. Gyms and fitness centers have been putting up live workouts for those to follow.

If it is a big firm or a company they can use statistical analysis in figuring out who visited the gym when it reopened. And then they can rebuild from there. That’s not the case with every gym though- Victoria is one example of being forced back into lockdown.

What we can hope for gyms in a post COVID world is they are COVID safe and are treated more like an essential service as exercise is medicine. And gyms are safe. But unfortunately, too many cowboys and girls are ruining it for everyone else.


Gumtree Goodfood

Gumtree Goodfood is a boutique place in South Yarra, Middle Park, and Albert Park. Here they sell the best items and before the Covid19 they used to let everyone taste stuff. We loved tasting the wines and now when restrictions are lifted I would love to go back there and buy a bottle just for myself at home.

Here they sell the freshest food and the nicest cheeses. Pre Covid19 they let everyone try the cheeses and the wines. The wines were really lovely and are all local

They not only sell fresh food but they sell pantry goods and ready made meals. I loved buying snacks and other sundries from there.

Do support them as they need your support. They only stock the best food around and they support local producers,.


Fitness Challenge 2020 June/July

So I was inspired by Dreams and Adventures at Cozy Cottage to take on this challenge. In Coronavirus isolation there isn’t much to do and even if the gyms were open I wouldn’t encourage people to rush back until the end of stage 3 of the lockdowns.

I’m lucky to live near a few good running paths.

June: Goal is to get to 80 miles by the end of the month and explore new places that I have never even heard of now that we are allowed unlimited travel. I met that and I ran 92.3 miles in the month.

During that time I explored Newmarket and Kensington for a bit.

July: Goal is to get to 120 miles by the end of the month. I didn’t meet that but I ran over 100 miles. The Government has put Stage 3 lockdowns in place and we can only run in our postcode but it was fun to explore the suburb.

The gyms were closed again so I couldn’t go there to exercise even if I tried. This month Coronavirus cases were on the high. On the 30th of July, we had 723 cases and people’s mental health had gone through the roof. Mine managed to stay sane due to all the exercise and sunshine I got.

During those two months, I did lots of Body Combat classes. It was fun and I tried lots of new moves. I also walked on the days that I was having a rest from running. It was really relaxing and I got to pat some of the dogs and try some of the yummy foods on offer there whilst doing my bit for the economy.


Homemade Cheong Fun

Cheong fun is the Chinese steamed rice roll filled with meat or seafood. You normally find them at yum cha restaurants. And its easy to make your own.

But during lockdown, you might not be able to go to your favorite yum cha place to enjoy them. You can enjoy them takeaway but it’s not the same and they are about $7-$10 for a plate of three. You can make a quite a bit at home with $10-$15 worth of ingredients

You’ll need the rice flour that you can find in most Asian grocery stores plus meat (beef or pork) or seafood, some soy sauce, chives, and a steamer. You can buy the steamer in most Asian places if you don’t have one.


Okonomiyaki

It’s part of the $120 food challenge

This is a Japanese pancake that is very cheap and easy to do. All you need is some shredded cabbage and other ingredients such as bacon, onion, carrots and flour and egg. Oh, you’ll also need a frying pan.

We normally buy onions in bulk and we have some at home. The cabbage is about $3-$4 per kg. You can do a vegetarian one or you can do a meat one.

Normally outside its about $10-$15 per person but at home it would be half that.


Changes in physical activity during the pandemic

Cambridge USA has just released this paper on attitudes towards physical activity during the COVID 19 which is said that the levels have decreased. The Stay at home orders was in place on the 16th of March (a week before Australia went into lockdown).

The COVID has increased people’s sitting and screen time and has decreased the exercise. People have been housebound due to lockdowns. Thus this worsens their mental health.

Iowa State University interviewed 3052 adults in the USA from 50 states. Participants were grouped as active or inactive (> 8 hours a day of screen time/sitting time). 62% of them were females aged from 18-75 years and during the pandemic weekly exercises have been reduced and there is an increase in sitting time. Those who were active before the pandemic saw their levels of activity drop. This is associated with poorer mental health. Therefore these people’s mental health issues have increased. For most people, it worsened their mental health as they were isolated.

In Melbourne, we have quite a few lockdowns and in those lockdown suburbs gyms have closed. We can still run outside, but we have to keep to our own area and not go elsewhere. Thus it saw fines increase and mental health problems increase as people were not happy with the current measures. People are lonely as everyone is at home.

We know that being in a gym environment is beneficial for all, particularly during the colder weather. Gyms are safe but people are not and its people that need to be educated on hygiene protocols. If we all practice social distancing at the gym then we’d be all happier and the Government would not need to spend so much money on Mental health services.

What the government should do is allow for gyms to stay open during this and other times.


Homemade spring rolls

Homemade spring rolls can be fun to do but can be time consuming. This is a good stay at home idea. Here’s a recipe for pork

We did ours in the airfryer but you can deep fry yours in a wok.

All the ingredients we bought in the Asian grocery store. But the pork mince, vegetables, and seafood you can normally buy them at the supermarket. You can make pork, vegetarian, seafood spring rolls.

It normally costs about $8-$12 outside but if you make it at home you can make lots with all the ingredients and its about $20-$30 depending on what you buy.


You don’t need material things to keep you happy

As the Coronavirus pandemic goes on and finances dries up we should stop and think about the material goods that we buy. Everytime we buy something and we only wear it (or use it) once, it either goes to the op shop or dumped when you move house.

Therefore it is money wasted.

As soon as the lockdown restrictions eased last time in Melbourne people went crazy at Chadstone and went on a huge shopping spree. Not only did they waste money on items they also put the worker’s lives at risk.

So I ask the question, do you need material things to keep you happy? The answer is no. You need money for some part of your happiness but most of it is free. We did do the 31 day of Buddha challenge and Tiny Buddha shows that if we do a little thing or two to brighten someone’s day that is much better. It could be complimenting someone on their mask or outfit or helping a charity. We rely too much on material goods and not on emotional needs. A compliment to someone doesn’t go astray. Nor does patting other people’s dogs outside. If you pat someone’s dogs outside it shows them you care about them and it would brighten their day. Their dogs would be happy and so would you. Seeing dogs is therapeutic for some people

Next time you go to the shops, think about this: do I really need that item? If not just walk out. That item can wait.


How the lockdowns have impacted us all

We write about how the lockdowns have impacted us all. We got the inspiration for this article from the Baker Institute who says that the lockdowns have impacted their research and it has delayed everything. They were preparing for this a few weeks before the whole of Australia was locked down.

But then comes the lockdowns and we’re all forced to work at home. That meant that research and everything was delayed. In most cases it cost them money.

But then during the lockdown, many businesses had to rethink their plans for opening up and working. Fitness Australia has been running these live COVID Series on Facebook to help gyms reopen in a COVID safe way.

Now in Victoria we are in the second lockdown and we learned some lessons from the first lockdown. Lessons about not touching your money and not buying things that you need did not sit well with me in the last lockdown. So during this lockdown, I will be supporting the economy big and small so that we can reopen with wages and not that many job losses. We can reopen without having so much debt which we have got into the first time around. Lately, I have been sharing some of my favorite restaurant posts in hopes that they will survive the second lockdown.

We now have to find a new normal and that can take some time for us to get used to. Working at home could be a new normal for a little while until a vaccine comes.


Managing anxiety throughout Coronavirus times

We talk about managing anxiety for autistic during the Coronavirus pandemic when we are all in lockdown and the carer might not be there to assist you.

I know of several friends who are autistic and would have a hard time managing anxiety. I know of one who misses the city so much. Pre pandemic he used to visit the city every day. Now we are in a lockdown.

For normal people anxiety is not such a huge issue for them. But for people who are autistic and cannot access their carers it can be. Not seeing extended family and friends can be a lot harder for them. Even seeing the high numbers can be a bit of a challenge.

Yenn Perkis has shared some of her strategies with us:

She says that some deep breathing strategies should be used. Meditation is one such useful strategy.

Mindful body awareness is another way of dealing with the anxiety of the challenge. Mindfulness helps as it is a meditation technique for anxiety and there are many apps to help with that. Headspace is awesome

Distract yourself with various fun things to do at home (or work for that matter). I know we’re allowed to leave the house for exercise. If you can do that, explore various paths in your local suburb/postcode (you can be the Karen of Brighton in this instance).

Seek help if you really need it. There are online services that counsel people with autism. Do have a look on Google.com to find your local one and remember that they can do telehealth in times of Coronavirus. Talk to friends online and seek help from your family. Your carer might be able to help if you have one.

This is one of ours. Try and stick to your routine as much as you can as this might help with your anxiety. Things are always changing on a daily basis but if you have a routine, it might help try and settle you.
