Overcoming gym fear

If you’re new to the gym you might find it a bit overwhelming at first. But it takes time to get used to it! Don’t be afraid to talk to other people. Many new members are scared of talking to others at first and getting immersed in the activities. Many new people would not have an idea as to how gym equipment or classes work for that matter.


In my first year at the gym, I was scared. The gym was a very overwhelming place to be in as everybody knew what they were doing and the staff there did nothing much to help me. That was at Melbourne Central. Then I was pressured to lose weight and it resulted in me losing some muscle and not fat. And it resulted in me puking during my periods.

I was yelled at a lot there from wearing the wrong clothes to other things like bad posture. I was embarrassed, to say the least. And I was yelled at for being late to class as I did not know that being late to class has serious consequences for the instructor and others. Nor did I know the tram timetable or expectations.

Then in my second year, I knew what I wanted and I knew that Flinders st was the right place for me as there everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Most of the staff welcome new people. And my cheekiness was allowed there.

And this time I attended classes early or right on time so I got the chance to talk to people new to it. As a marathoner, I valued people’s time and walked everywhere.

This time I know that I don’t need to go to the gym to lose weight! Although losing weight would be nice. But it’s not the end all as we have muscle, fat and water weight to contend with.  Because there is the muscle which you gain as well as the water weight. And the hormonal changes. Lose too much weight and you’ll not have a period.
